The 2016-17 NBA Season takes center stage on Sunday now that the NFL Season has come to an end. This weeks NBA Sunday schedule includes a solid four game slate that wraps up out on the West Coast as the Sacramento Kings welcome the New Orleans Pelicans to the Golden 1 Center.
For these two clubs the 2016-17 NBA Season has been a complete roller coaster ride with neither team finding a way to win a game. Entering their showdown on Sunday the Pelicans have picked up just 21 wins over their first 54 games while playing to just a 7-18 record on the road. Meanwhile the Kings have won just 22 of their first 32 games including winning just 11 of their first 26 games at home.
With all that said this looks to be the game to watch on Sunday as two of the NBA’s top stars Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins look to lead their teams to a key win. Davis enters this game averaging 27.9 points a game this season to go with 12.1 rebounds per contest. Cousins enters this game averaging 27.8 points per game while picking up 10.7 rebound while also dishing out nearly five assists.
Now these two stars will suit up on Sunday in what should be a great contest on the hardwood. Here is a quick look at the keys to the New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings on Sunday February 12th, 2017.
New Orleans Pelicans @ Sacramento Kings (-3.5)
February 12th, 2016 @ 9pm ET
All on Davis: For the Pelicans to be successful the team needs Davis to carry the load on all ends of the floor. This is more importantly on the offensive side of the ball where the team’s success revolves around how much Davis can dominate. In each of the Pelicans last two wins, Davis has been able to score at last 34 points while also picking up at least nine rebounds.
Shut Down Defense: The success for the Kings will revolve around their success on the defensive side of the floor. In their first meeting the Kings were able to shut down the Pelicans from behind the three point line. In the Kings 102-94 win back on November 6th, 2016 the team managed to hold the Pelicans to just 23% from behind the three point line while also forcing 10 turnovers.
Heading into their Sunday Night showdown the Kings have the slight advantage based on their success against the spread. On the year the Kings are 27-25 against the spread while posting a 13-12 record at home. Despite that success the Kings have had there struggles against the spread of late failing to cover the spread in their last four games against the NBA Southwest Conference as well as their last four games against teams with a losing record.
The Pelicans struggles this season have shown up in both the standings as well as their success against the spread. Entering their showdown with the Kings on Sunday the Pelicans are just 26-28 against the spread while going 12-13 on the road. This includes covering the spread in just one of their last five games on Sunday as well as just once over their last five times.
Leading up to the Pelicans/Kings showdown on Sunday Night the Pelicans have controlled the series over their last five contests while covering the spread in four of those games. Despite that success the Pelicans have had their hands full on the road in Sacramento over the years covering the spread in just six of their last 24 trips out West.
Prediction – Sacramento Kings -3.5
